Yesterday I drank a glass of Pink Flamingo

… is that a cocktail with cranberry juice? A Martini with rose syrup?  A long drink with feathers? No, no and no again.

The Pink Flamingo is a rosé gris de gris from the French region of Languedoc-Roussillon that I had the pleasure to taste in the delicious company of Miss GlouGlou and it is one of the many wines with unexpected, quirky and sometimes even very rude names. Let’s have a look at some of them:

There are the The Fat Bastard wines from Languedoc-Roussillon. A brand name that was born on a night when, drinking with English friends, the winemaker tasted an experimental wine the back of his cellar and exclaimed: ‘now zat iz what you call eh phet bast-ard‘. It  has to be pronounced with the French accent so as not to lose it original flavour.

Cats Pee on a Gooseberry Bush. A Sauvignon Blanc  from Coopers Creek in New-Zealand, renamed and distributed by Noble Estates in Canada. Funnily enough, the name comes from cold scientific facts:  A team of New-Zealand researchers spent more than $12 million defining the flavours of the country’s most popular grape variety, Sauvignon Blanc, and they concluded it was a winning combination of sweet, sweaty passionfruit, asparagus, and cat’s pee. Positively mouth-watering!

There are quite a few names that are inspired by our pet/animal friends:

For instance, Little Piggy Pink from Fresh Tracks Farm and distributed Vermont Wines in the USA.

Or The Funly Llama, a Malbec from Argentina and the Vina Fundacion de Mendoza.

The Little Penguin from Australia was named after the smallest of the Penguins found along the South-Eastern coast of the country.

And The Eye of the Toad from Toad Hollow. Created by two friends, Dr Toad and Dancing Badger, a private joke turned into a brand name!

If you want to go for real crazy, have a look at the ChardonnAlien or CabernAlien from Cosmic Cruzer in the Santa Cruz Mountains that can ordered here.

Mad Housewife cellars and wines in California, ask ‘What is domestic bliss without a little wine?‘…

While another Californian Winery, the Folie à Deux, believes that domestic bliss comes through a Ménage à Trois, a blend of Zifandel, Merlot and Cabernet.

Worse of them all I believe, the BITCH Australian Grenache from R Wines and distributed by KL Wine Merchants who proudly announce: ‘Life may be a bitch, but this wine will keep the complaints away, at least while you’re drinking it!’

There are many more of these… And I actually found a list thank to, read on if you dare:
